Chiropractic Care for Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome is caused when fluid, bone, or tight tendons press on the nerve within the carpal tunnel of the wrist. The symptoms usually start gradually. One might experience a burning, tingling, or itching numbness in the palm of the hand and the fingers. Some people feel the need to “shake out” the hand or wrist and feel swelling even though swelling is not apparent.
What causes Carpal Tunnel Syndrome? Movements and pressure on the median nerve at the wrist triggers carpal tunnel syndrome. For example, repetitive wrist or hand motion brought about by extended uninterrupted typing, playing musical instruments, sports, and activities like knitting may be contributing factors. The median nerve, which starts in the neck and travels down the arm to the wrist and hand, can become entrapped anywhere along its path.
Chiropractic care addresses the problem with muscle and joint therapy by applying controlled pressure to misaligned areas in the neck and upper spine. According to Prevention Magazine: “Anyone suffering from carpal tunnel syndrome should see a chiropractor to ensure that his or her spinal column is free from nerve pressure between the arms and wrists along with the nerves in the neck.”
There is also the possibility for a surgical option, where the hand is cut open at the wrist and the ligament of the carpal tunnel is snipped. However, a less invasive and painful approach can be achieved by treating the spasms of the muscles through chiropractic treatment. This includes sessions of adjustments and stretching so that sufferers can return to normal functioning of the hand and wrist.
It is important to treat carpal tunnel when the symptoms begin. Early treatment with chiropractic, in addition to wearing a brace and avoiding the repetitive motion that initiated carpal tunnel, will prevent more serious problems and the need for surgery. Some of the issues that arise from ignoring carpal tunnel are: atrophy and weakness in the muscle, loss of sleep due to the pain, weakened grip, and loss of dexterity in the fingers.

Four Ways Graston Technique Can Help You

The majority of patients who come to see me have added Graston treatment to their overall wellness and chiropractic care regiment.  Graston technique is an advanced type of massage with specialized tools benefitting people of all ages and body types with various degrees of pain due to inflammation. You’ll feel the benefits of the massage right away, and over time problem areas will regain their mobility.

What can it do for you?

1.

Graston technique targets pain or discomfort associated with scar tissue and inflammation. The Graston tools break up scar tissue and soft tissue fibrosis.  This eases a range of pain associated with neck, joints, shin splints, and back.  Whether you havepain from poor posture sitting at work, or from strain induced by athletic activities, this treatment “combs” over affected problem areas to splay and stretch connective tissue.

2.

Increases and/or restores mobility and range of motion. If you are recovering from an injury or a surgery then Graston technique can enable and quicken a safe and less painful rehabilitation.

3.

Positive response within 4 treatments! You will feel fewer restrictions in your joints and better mobility by the 4th treatment.  A lot of patients express more comfort right after their first massage!

4.

Minimizes need for anti-inflammatory medication.  With each area treated, the tools enable more blood flow to the area and increased cellular activity.  Graston technique works with your body to promote healing in the muscle.  This treatment has also been known to effectively manage and relieve chronic pain conditions.
